Samples of the 4 ribbon colors will be available to view at our July 20th meeting only. One spool of ribbon is 25 yards and will make four 3” Pine Cones. The cost is $6.00 which includes tax and shipping. In addition to the ribbon, you will need 1 1/16” straight pins, Styrofoam egg in size 3 1/2” or mini at 2” or jumbo at 5”. Dragonfly: An Introduction to Underside Couching in Gold   Presented by Margaret C. In the Middle Ages a type of embroidery called 'Opus Anglicanum' was used to embellish fabrics. Opus Anglicanum was commonly comprised of underside couching with gold thread (in the background of the design) with foreground figures split stitched in silk thread.
This project will introduce you to 'underside couching'. Underside couching differs from surface couching in that the couching thread is used to pull the couched thread (in this case the gold) to the back of the fabric.
Please note that only the gold thread portion of the dragonfly design (the background disk) will be taught. Students will have the freedom to stitch their dragonflies in any way they choose. It's a good opportunity to use some of those threads, beads, and whatever else you might have in your stash.
Participants may choose either gold or silver thread for the underside couching. The gold threads will be worked on ivory linen and the silver thread kits will have white linen.
>>
The kit will include:
2 Bohin chenille needles; 1 spool Kreinik Japanese #1 metallic (imitation gold thread); 1 spool Gutermann's top stitching thread for couching; 2 pieces of linen with design pre-printed on one piece (project is worked through two pieces of fabric); and, Instructions.
Students will need to provide:
Good quality hoop (e.g., Hardwicke Manor) with screw tightener (I used a 5", but a 4" should work); Screwdriver for hoop (fabric must be kept taut); some sort of clamp for the hoop as you need both hands free to do underside goldwork couching; scissors; threads, beads, etc. for finishing the body of the dragonfly. (These do not have to be brought to the class session.) Remember, only the gold part of the design will be taught. A sharp needle will also be required to finish the embroidery. It might be possible to use the chenille, but an embroidery/crewel needle is more suitable.
